The Urban Food Project is a Non Profit in Birmingham, Alabama that is helping get fresh vegetables into small Mom&Pop corner stores in areas that are suffering from food drought. They are making contact with the stores and showing them how this is a potential profit center and working with local row crop farmers to sell all they can produce. They do this by distribution in local restaurants and their network of stores.
Row crop farmers work small plots growing small amounts of fruits and vegetables that have a short shelf life. The Urban Food Project helps them sell all they can produce.
The Urban Food Project acts as a fresh vegetable distributions center. They collect and pay for the vegetables, then distribute them to local restaurants and small "Mom and Pop" stores in areas of urban blight and food deserts.
